Diabetes & Pregnancy Educational Program
Pregnancy and new motherhood are times of great excitement, worries and many changes for any woman. If you have diabetes and are pregnant, your pregnancy is automatically considered a high-risk pregnancy. High risk means you need to pay special attention to your health. Special care and attention are the keys to a successful pregnancy.
We strive to empower people living with diabetes, through education and support, to take an active role in their own health and well-being.

Pre-conception counseling of the woman with diabetes desiring pregnancy
Intensive nutritional and diabetes education for the pregnant woman
Social Services counseling
Who should be referred for classes?
All pregnant women with diabetes during pregnancy
Any woman with diabetes planning to become pregnant
What should I expect if I join the program?
We are committed to provide you with the special care you need during this very important time.

How to keep you and your baby healthy before, during and after your pregnancy
How to create a meal plan based on your needs
How to use a meter to check your blood sugar
Safe exercises during pregnancy
How to use insulin (if ordered by your doctor)
What to expect during and after delivery
Do I need to see a diabetes educator if I saw one during a previous pregnancy?
Yes. Diabetes educators will help you review how to manage this condition and update your meal plan as needed.
How can my doctor refer me?
You may be enrolled in our program once our Education Department receives a completed referral form from your doctor. A doctor's order is necessary for us to begin the enrollment process.

Are there any changes that I can make before I have my appointment with a diabetes educator?
Yes. Even small changes in your eating can help lower your blood sugar levels.
How much should I eat?
Try to eat 3 meals and 3-4 small snacks spread evenly throughout the day.
What food should I eat?
Choose foods from all food groups (fruits, vegetables, meat, dairy, and whole grain).
Are there any drinks of foods that I should avoid?
Do not drink juices, regular (non-diet) soda or other sweet drinks. Avoid desserts, candy and other sweets.
